The 2026 Best Forum Article Award, the presentation voted most interesting in General Session 8, chairing an international scientific session, and celebrating 30 years of the ABHRS.
Greek physician Georgios Zontos, MD, MSc, PhD, FISHRS, concluded a multifaceted and distinguished participation in the 34th World Congress of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS), held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in October 2026. Official ISHRS website: https://ishrs.org/
His participation combined scientific research, international recognition, physician education, chairing a specialized scientific session, and significant administrative responsibilities.
Of particular importance was his election to the ISHRS Board of Governors, a major distinction on the international stage and a reflection of Greek representation in the leadership of a prominent global scientific society in hair restoration surgery.
International Recognition for the Best Scientific Forum Article of 2026
A highlight was the presentation to Georgios Zontos of the ISHRS O’Tar Norwood Best Forum Article Award 2026, recognizing the year’s best scientific article in Hair Transplant Forum International. The award recognized his article entitled “Non-Shaven Follicular Unit Excision (NS-FUE): Technical Refinements, Clinical Outcomes, and Comparison with Conventional and Long Hair FUE.”
The paper examines technical refinements, clinical applications, and outcomes of non-shaven hair transplantation, comparing this approach with conventional FUE and Long Hair FUE.
The technique is of particular interest to patients who wish to undergo hair transplantation without the aesthetic and social impact that shaving the scalp may entail.
The award, featuring an eagle with outstretched wings, symbolically evokes knowledge, vision, and the pursuit of scientific excellence.
Its presentation to the Greek physician represents significant international recognition of his research.

The Most Interesting Presentation in General Session 8
Georgios Zontos’s presentation in General Session 8: Complications & Challenging Cases, entitled “A Geometric Model for Predicting Donor Area Thinning After FUE,” attracted considerable interest.
The talk introduced a geometric model for predicting donor-area thinning following follicular unit excision (FUE) hair transplantation.
Proper donor-area management is essential to safe surgical planning, as excessive follicular unit extraction can cause permanent thinning and aesthetic deterioration.
The model uses mathematical and geometric parameters to support a more objective assessment of the effects of graft extraction.
His presentation was voted the most interesting presentation of General Session 8.
In response to the scientific interest it generated, Georgios Zontos was invited to participate the following day in “Table with the Experts,” where he had additional time to explain his research model and answer specialized questions from colleagues.
This invitation highlighted the interest in applying mathematical models to preoperative planning and donor-area preservation.
Related research has also been published in the international scientific journal Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology.
Scientific Presentation in the Long Hair FUE Session
Georgios Zontos also spoke in “Focused Session 202: Long Hair FUE,” discussing contemporary applications of Non-Shaven FUE.
The session focused on advances in hair transplantation techniques that allow follicular units to be extracted and implanted without conventional shaving.
His contribution reflects his longstanding clinical and research involvement in this technique, which was also the subject of his award-winning article.
Chair of the International Morbidity & Mortality Conference
Another significant scientific responsibility was chairing the ISHRS & ABHRS Morbidity & Mortality (M&M) Conference on October 16.
Georgios Zontos served as Session Chair, alongside Co-Chair Asim Shahmalak, MBBS, FISHRS, from the United Kingdom.
The session focuses on the presentation and analysis of actual cases involving surgical complications and challenging clinical circumstances.
Its purpose is to share clinical experience, identify risk factors, and develop more effective strategies for preventing and managing complications.
Chairing such a session is an important scientific responsibility closely connected to patient safety and improvements in the quality of surgical care.
Active Involvement in Physician Education and Certification Through the ABHRS
A significant part of his activities in Rio involved the educational programs of the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery (ABHRS), an organization dedicated to physician certification in hair restoration surgery. Official ABHRS website: https://abhrs.org/
On October 14, during the ABHRS Advanced Board Review Course, Georgios Zontos delivered the lecture “Differential Diagnosis of Male Pattern Hair Loss.”
The lecture addressed the differential diagnosis of androgenetic alopecia and the importance of identifying other conditions that can cause hair loss or influence treatment selection.
He also served as faculty for the Mock Oral Examination, assigned to Table 3, and participated in the Mock Written Examination and related scientific discussions.
This work contributes to the education of physicians from different countries and promotes high standards of scientific knowledge and professional competence.
Celebrating 30 Years of the ABHRS
This year’s events were especially meaningful as they marked the 30th anniversary of the founding of the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery (ABHRS).
Founded in 1996, the organization celebrated three decades of work in physician certification in hair restoration surgery.
The anniversary was commemorated at a special event in Rio de Janeiro attended by ABHRS leaders, Diplomates, and representatives of the international scientific community.
Georgios Zontos attended the anniversary celebrations in his capacity as ABHRS Secretary, a position he assumed in 2026.
Having previously served on the ABHRS Board of Directors and as Treasurer, he continues his longstanding involvement in the organization’s leadership.
He also participated in ABHRS Board of Directors meetings addressing physician certification and recertification, continuing medical education, and the maintenance of high professional standards.
Election to the ISHRS Board of Governors — A Major International Distinction
Of particular significance in Georgios Zontos’s scientific career is his election to the Board of Governors of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS).
This is a major distinction on a global scale, as the ISHRS is a prominent international scientific organization in hair restoration surgery, with members from many countries.
His election recognizes his scientific career, international involvement, and contributions to the field of hair restoration surgery.
It also carries significance for the Greek medical community, strengthening Greece’s representation in an international organization that plays an important role in education, knowledge exchange, and quality improvement in hair transplantation.
His election to the ISHRS Board, together with his duties as ABHRS Secretary, reflects his continued international engagement and the confidence he has earned through his scientific and professional career.
A Strong Greek Presence in the International Scientific Community
Georgios Zontos’s participation in the 34th ISHRS World Congress in Rio de Janeiro encompassed a broad range of scientific, educational, and institutional activities.
The O’Tar Norwood Best Forum Article Award 2026, the selection of his GS8 talk as the session’s most interesting presentation, his invitation to “Table with the Experts,” chairing the Morbidity & Mortality Conference, teaching ABHRS candidates, celebrating the organization’s 30th anniversary, and his election to the ISHRS Board of Governors together represent a significant international presence.
His career illustrates the ability of Greek medical scientists to contribute meaningfully to international developments, produce recognized research, and represent Greece at major scientific forums worldwide.
At the heart of this work remain scientific evidence, innovation, continuing education, medical ethics, and, above all, patient safety.
